Troop 55 May 2005 Spring Camporee
We had a great time at the 2005 Camporee. 23 Scouts and 13 adults camped. We also had 4 sets of parents
who chose to camp in their trailers instead of the tents. Even though it rained both nights, it did
nothing to dampen the scouts spirits. They worked hard and many completed their Soil and Water Conservation
Merit Badge. They also had games, biking, frisbee, rifle range, kayaks, canoes, fishing and
more to keep the scouts busy. Below is just a sampling of the weekend:
| |
We were greeted by a rather dangerous duo. However, after our Scoutmaster promised to feed them, they let us pass.
The tents were put up first. |
|
Next came time to get the dining canopy up.
After its up and ready to use. With all of the rain, we were very happy to have one! |
|
The adults were a great help. Don't you always need a supervisor?
As has become a tradition, the Dragon Patrol cooked popcorn the first night.
The next morning the Merit Badge started. There over 230 scouts taking this badge. The sponsoring Troop did a great job arranging and coordinating all of the stations.
Ben shows the proper way to catch water critters.
Dan and Ben examine the catch. They learned about water animals and how they relate to water quality.
Next they learned about soil..
They learned what forms soil, and how the components are formed. They learned about what nutrients are needed. |
|
Next was a fun station about water conservation. He had a model of a city complete with dirt that smelled like hot chocolate and fertilizer that looked like cinanmon. He even had a spray bottle of rain.
As part of the activity, everyone helped to plant trees. Here the park ranger shows off a sappling. |
|
They planted a lot of trees in the morning.
That afternoon, as part of a service project, the Dragon Patrol returned and planted more trees.
The Dragons show their unique way to take a break.
The adults also needed a break of a hard morning watching the scouts work.
The canoes and kayaks were a lot of fun
Chris, Clayton, Quinn and Nick show their kayak abilities.
Dan and Neal chose the canoe. |
|
There was a Dutch Oven dessert contest. Troop 55 continue their tradition and entered the contest. The Flaming Arrows took second place with a delicious Cherry Cobbler. Neal collects the prize.
Dan takes part in a skit. Pilot to Bombardier. . . You'll have to ask Dan about the rest of the story.
