Summer Camp 2005

It was summer camp at Ingawanis. 24 scouts and 9 adult scouters came for the fun, activities, merit badges and advancements. Troop 55 made a good accounting of themselves again this year. We were awarded the Lord Baden Powell award, won the "Staff Search" and won the Camp Spirit Stick for the second straight year!

Packing

It's always hurry up and wait. . .
After ariving at camp, we had to check in and get instructions at the mess hall before setting up at our camp site.

Even in the July, scouts love a good campfire. While the mosquitos were not bad, the smoke from the fire helped keep them away.

Environmental Science

We had a lot of the second year scouts take the Environmental Science merit Badge. They had a lot of fun working on it, but it did require a lot of their time.

Every scout in Environmental Science had to build and observe an ecosystem. Plastic pop bottles were popular for the ecosystem container.

archery

Austin took archery. As part of the course, they got to build their own arrow.

Carson shows us how it's done.

Sing The mess hall had one rule - wear you hat indoors and you get to sing for your supper. Michelle, Dana and several others forgot the rule and they had the chance to entertain us.
Once again a large catapult was built. . Catapult
Gateway The scouts worked really hard on building the gateway to our camp. Robbie and Thanasey led the way, and guided the scouts.
The gateway was lashed together and self supporting, no holes were dug or needed. Gateway1
Search Troop 55 captures another staff member. Each camp staff member could hide anywhere, and use any camouflage. You had to find them, identify them by name and the station they worked at. We won the "Staff Hunt" and got to throw all of the staff in the pool..
They had a "redneck" olympics for the scouts. It had many unusual sports. Here Jordan shows his technique in the hubcap toss. toss

tree

On Wednesday night we had a severe thunderstorm with 80 mph winds. Across the camp, several trailers were damaged by trees and several tents were hit by trees. Luckily, nobody was injured. This is the remains of our Scoutmasters tent. All of the scout tents stayed in place and only a few were wet inside. Dans', Gregs' and Lorens' tent all sustained some damage from the strom. Maybe we could learn something from the scouts? One of many trees that were blown down.

Loren was inducted into the Order of the Arrow. As his "ordeal" the next day, he had the opportunity to mow most of the camp.

bday

Nobody knows how, but the staff found out that it was Loren's birthday. To celebrate, they sang Happy Birthday to him, Scout Style!

Loren helped celebrate his birthday by making several flavors of his famous homemade icecream. It went fast and eveyone enjoyed it.

Space exploration was very popular. As part of the badge, each scout got to make their own rocket and launch it.

Canoeing was also very popular. Everyone had fun and learned a lot. As part of the training, they had to learn what to do if the canoe tips or capsizes. They did that training in the pool. I've never seen so many canoes in one pool. It's tough to canoe in rough water. Look at some of the whitecaps they had on a small pond. The scouts had to learn to change seats in the canoe, paddle with 2 persons and solo.

Horseback riding was another badge that the scouts enjoyed. They learned the parts of a horse, how to take care of the horse and brush it.
