Troop 55 2006 Volga Lake Camp Out
Troop 55 went to Volga Lake. This is a beautiful park in Northeast Iowa. Besides the lake, there is hiking and lots of horse trails. While the weather didn't cooperate, everyone still had fun.
On most weekends, all of the tie-ups for horses are used. This weekend, only a few stayed around.
A scout is always prepared. We put up the ends and sides of the dining fly. When it rained, we were very glad they were up. |
|
All of the scout tents in a straight line.
The tents and dining fly were put up just in time as the sky grew threatening. |
|
The park ranger came around to give directions if the weather became too severe. It never did. He had a lot of helpful hints. |
|
Then there were those who decided to "rough it" in a 5th wheel. |

Volga Lake is a very scenic lake. While you can take boats on the lake, it is a no-wake lake. |
|
Before starting to fish, the scouts did a service project cleaning up the edge of the lake. |
|
While they tried, they could not tip over the dock or fall into the lake.
Sue and Hero were hard at work supervising the scouts fishing.

Dave had an unfair advantage with his "Sponge Bob" pole. He shows of one of many fish. He stated "It may look small, but it put up a whale of a fight. That's my story and I'm sticking to it". |
|
Josh catches his first fish of the day.
All of the scouts had fun catching fish. We ended up with about 25 keepers and many more that were too small. Dan was trying for the smallest fish - this was a good effort, but others still had smaller.
How many scouts and scouters can fit on one small point?

After fishing, Loren showed the scouts how to fillet fish. As part of their fishing merit badge, each scout had to catch and release one fish and catch and clean one.
