November 2008 The Annual Thanksgiving Camp Out - Fontana Park
Every year Troop 55 has a Thanksgiving feast as part of the November Camp Out. This year, due to multiple conflicts, we had a smaller turnout than usual. However, we all had fun. Who would have thought we would end up 2 hours short of earning a "Red Flannel"? On Saturday, it warmed up to 34 degrees for about 2 hours.
The campsite came with a cat. Dan and Josh play with the weekend mascot. I suspect we were not the first campsite that it has frequented.
After setting up camp, there were games of UNO, chess matches and Othello. |
Saturday morning, the tents were covered with frost and snow.
Al and Roy inspect one of the tents. |
A warm hearty breakfast helped warm everyone up.
We started the morning off with a service project. For the winter, the picnic tables needed to be stacked. |
We stacked tables in 3 different areas.

One of the areas of stacked picnic tables.
This is a beautiful park. It has an unusual laminated wood bridge |

Another view of the bridge. |
Josh is taught some orienteering skills. |
They have an amazing visitors center with nice displays inside. The scouts spent nearly 2 hours going through it.
Besides many birds, they have 2 bears.
They have a Mountain Lion. |
They also have some deer. |
In the afternoon, Dan taught the younger scouts what they needed to know for their Totin' Chip.
Al observes as Dan teaches. It's nice to see an older scout mentoring the younger scouts. |
Al explains how to sharpen an axe or hatchet.
You must have turkey at a Thanksgiving feast. Turkey in a dutch oven is amazing!!! |
Chuck starts working on a side dish. |
The final turkey. There was very little left. |
