October 2008 Camp Matigwa Camp Out
This was our first time to stay at Camp Matigwa. We were supposed to be at a campsite and stay in tents. However, they had shut off the water, so we were moved to a cabin.
It was a very nice cabin.
The first night always starts with a Cracker Barrel.
Then the scouts spent the rest of the night with multiple games.
The inside of the cabin |
|
The plan for the morning - a one mile orienteering course. The weather was beautiful, and it was a great chance for the newer scouts and those who needed Orienteering for their First Class to finish a requirement. Al goes over the directions.
Some last minute instructions |
|
One group decides on the direction to the next check point. They all did really well and had fun.
The afternoon - The climbing tower and rapelling!!! Oh YEA!!! |
|
We had instruction on the ropes and putting on the harness
Everyone had to have a helmet |
|
Garrett shows everyone how to go up the wall.
Then everyone had their chance to climb. There was always a safety line when you climbed and a person hooked to it to lower you down after the climb. There were three sides to climb, each a little different than the others.
The rock wall was fun and challenging
When climbing that side, you HAD to reach the skull and put your fingers in the eyes. Nick shows how its done.
Nice climbing |
|
Finally, time for the rapelling side.
It is a very strange sensation to slowly lean back and let out rope |
|
A few baby steps to start
Now you can walk or bounce your way down |
|
Jan shows off . . . |
|
Josh shows his climbing skill |
|
The smile says it all! | |
Caleb gives a big smile to his mom. |
|
Have we ever had a camp out without a fire?
The end of the afternoon was a football game |
|
They still were not tired out
Caleb shows off his winning desert - a dutch oven Pineapple Upside down cake. It was delicious (and disappeared fast) |
