OKPIK Winnebago Council Trek 2010
This year, the Council had 2 groups head up
to the Northern Tier High Adventure fora 2 day adventure of Winter Camping. For those who love winter camping,
there is no better place. I have been there on 2 other occassions, but this was my first 2 night
stay. I enjoyed it much more than the one night stay. You have much more time to do everything, you don't feel
rushed and you have downtime to enjoy. Once you arrive, you are assigned a cabin for the first night. There is an instructional meeting that follows. Then its time to pick up any extra gear that you need.
They have a large supply of almost anything that you may need from boots, to coats, gloves, tents, etc.
Packing up in the morning. Almost ready to go. |
|
Once at our camp site, it was time to set up tents, if you were using one and get your gear put away.
Then time to drill a hole in the ice. All of our water comes from the lake. |
|
While it looks clean, you want to boil it before drinking.
We had a really nice area for a fire, snow benches even! |

|
Around the lake was about 3/4 of a mile as the boys ski.
Mid afternoon downtime and Dan reads. |
|
Nick and James ponder what to try next
While several Quinzees were there to use, the scouts finish their own. Lots of room in this one! |
|
Next morning, Dan is still sleeping. The weather was unseasonably warm(10 degrees at night) and several boys chose to sleep outside.
Getting breakfast ready. |
|
The fog rolled in later that morning.
More fog. |
|
We hiked to the next lake over from where we stayed. We were to go dog sledding here. while waiting, the football came out.
Nick had fun! |
|
As did James and Ryan | |
The dogs arrive |
|
While they are not pets, they do love attention.
Nick ready to go for a ride |
|
James is right behind | |
Ryan just waiting to start. |
|
More fun | |
This was the first time we had a chance to mush, and Dan made the most of it. |
|
Dan returns from his ride around the lake.
a map of some of the area we used. |
|
It may not look like much, but this was our kitchen for 2 days.
Northern Minnesota is a really pretty area in the winter. |
