Bens' Eagle Project 2012
For his Eagle Project, Ben decided to build bat houses that would be put in one of the city parks. While many people don't like bats, they are a huge benefit for city parks. They keep the population of many insects under control, and they are cool to watch fly at night.
The first step was cutting the wood pieces and then assembling the bat houses.
Even thought the houses are very narrow, many bats can be in one house. This one is nearly together. |
Roy and Andrew work as a team.
Once all of the houses were built, they needed to be stained. Lots of help make projects go faster. |
Nearly finished with the staining.
A little time to dry, and they will be reasy to put upu another day. |
The mounting brackets also needed to be stained.
The houses were then mounted on the steel post. |
The first house goes up in Big Woods Lake. The ground was really hard and took a while to get the hole dug.
A few more screws go in to be sure the houses are sturdy on the pole. |
Cement is mixed up on site to fill the hole and keep the post from moving.
The first bat house goes into the ground. |
Then, the concrete goes in.
Once the pole is checked to be sure it is straight, it is braced until the cement is dry. |
On to the next house. | |
This one went in at Fogdall. |
It looks straight. Just secure the bracing and another one is done.
A good crew makes the Eagle Projects go faster and more fun. |
Digging a hole at Black Hawk park.
The house is up, just finishing the bracing. |
It looks like Ben has a happy crew. He must have fed them well.

More cement. Planning is important. You must have everything there that you need.
Mounting the last house. |
Setting the last house.
Ok, a little to the left . . . |
Securing a brace. | |
That looks srong. |
The last bat house. Straight, braced, and looks great.
Ready for new tennants. It make take a few years for the bats to find the houses, but they will be used. |
